Sun to release source-code of Solaris

Posted on Sunday, June 06 2004 @ 23:56:41 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

Last week Executives of Sun Microsystems told consumers something extraordinary, that they might turn their operating system Solaris into open-source software.

Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's new CEO, told last week in Shanghai that Sun would release source code from its Solaris operating system trough an open-source license.
Sun declined to provide details on how the move would affect its overall business model, or whether the firm would provide all or only parts of the source code through an open-source licence.

Sun has been maintaining tight control over Solaris, its proprietary network operating system for server computers.
