UPDATE: A leaked slide confirms the lower idle power consumption.

We expect the power consumption of NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce GTX 280 will be rather high in full load but according to German tech site Hardware-Infos the power consumption of the GT200 isn't as bad as some people expect it will be. The site heard from someone who his the card in his possession that the GeForce GTX 280 uses only 30W in idle mode.

The site isn't sure how it's done but speculates the card may feature a special 2D power savings mode. The reporter says this means the GeForce GTX 280 will consume about 5W less in idle than the GeForce 8800 GT, but it's still about 11W more than the Radeon HD 3870 but that shouldn't come as a surprise as the GT200 features a lot more transistors.
