ASUS contracts Foxconn to make X-series notebooks

Posted on Monday, September 29 2008 @ 09:32:08 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

DigiTimes heard ASUS has outsourced production of 15.4" X-series notebooks to Foxconn:
Asustek Computer will outsource the production of 15.4-inch X-series notebooks to Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), with shipments expected to start in January or February 2009, with initial volumes of 40,000-50,000 per month, according to Taiwan notebook component makers.

The sources pointed out that Asustek has decided to reduce overlapping specifications across notebook models and will concentrate on shipping higher volumes of fewer models for the next two quarters. The company usually has up to 5-7 different specifications for one notebook model, incurring higher labor costs and more complicated component management. Asustek is beginning to adjust notebook specifications from September aiming to improve the outsourcing volume of single products, and expects to complete the adjustment in October.
ASUS expects to outsource about 30 percent of its notebook and Eee PC production in Q2 2009 to cut costs.
