S3 to launch GammeChrome graphics cards in Q4

Posted on Wednesday, September 29 2004 @ 14:22:27 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

In the fourth quarter of this year S3 will launch graphics card using its GammaChrome 3D graphics accelerator. The GammaChrome chips will ship in three versions, although only one will enter mass production in the fourth quarter.

According to S3 these chips should deliver performance similar to ATI's X600Pro.
The GammaChrome will feature a built-in high-speed interconnect (HIS) bridge chip for PCIe connectivity, according to Liu. S3 is also cooperating with Rambus to enhance the stability of the data transmission.

However, Liu said that AGP8X graphics chips will still be the mainstream products for S3 in the fourth quarter. In addition, S3 will start marketing its OmniChrome chip, a member of its DeltaChrome S4 lineup, in October.
