    Intel investigating NVIDIA's x86 plans

Posted on Friday, March 27 2009 @ 00:25:01 CET by Thomas De Maesschalck

Here are some more snips about what Intel CEO Paul Otellini told employees in a webcast earlier this week. Silicon Forest reports Otellini said the company is still studying whether NVIDIA's plans to develop a x86 processor challenge Intel's patents. The answer to that question will ultimaty depend on what NVIDIA produces.
When Otellini opened the floor to a Q&A, he fielded questions on Intel's x86 architecture, which the company licenses out to others. Intel has already said it will challenge AMD's plan to split off its manufacturing, based on a perception that it violates the terms of AMD's x86 license. Otellini said the company is still studying whether to challenge Nvidia's plan to develop its own x86 processor, and indicated the answer will depend on what Nvidia ultimately produces.
Otellini also talked about a one-time merit-based stock grant for its employees, which he sees as an investment in employees.
