Shortage of 1.8-inch HDDs expected in Q3 2009
| |
Posted on Monday, June 29 2009 @ 03:15:36 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck |
DigiTimes reports supplies of 1.8" HDDs are under pressure as Samsung has exited this market, leaving Toshiba as the only player in this business. The site heard a shortage of 1.8" HDDs may drive up prices of netbooks and ultraportable notebooks in Q3 2009.The height of a 1.8-inch HDD is only 5mm, compared to 7-9.5mm for a 2.5-inch HDD. 1.8-inch drives can save space and are recommended by Intel for ultra-thin notebooks or netbooks.
The shortage could trigger a price increase hampering notebook and netbook shipments for several vendors in third-quarter 2009, the sources added.
