Shortage of 1.8-inch HDDs expected in Q3 2009

Posted on Monday, June 29 2009 @ 03:15:36 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

DigiTimes reports supplies of 1.8" HDDs are under pressure as Samsung has exited this market, leaving Toshiba as the only player in this business. The site heard a shortage of 1.8" HDDs may drive up prices of netbooks and ultraportable notebooks in Q3 2009.
The height of a 1.8-inch HDD is only 5mm, compared to 7-9.5mm for a 2.5-inch HDD. 1.8-inch drives can save space and are recommended by Intel for ultra-thin notebooks or netbooks.

The shortage could trigger a price increase hampering notebook and netbook shipments for several vendors in third-quarter 2009, the sources added.
