Blu-ray notebooks to take off in 2H 2010

Posted on Wednesday, September 30 2009 @ 00:04:58 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

Taiwanese optical drive makers told DigiTimes that shipments of notebooks with Blu-ray drives are expected to take off in the second half of 2010. Adoption rates are slow because typical slim-type Blu-ray drives still cost about five times more than a DVD burner:
Blu-ray notebooks are currently still limited to the high-end market due to high costs – a slim-type Blu-ray drive costs around US$100, while a slim-type DVD burner can be sourced for only around US$20.

However, Blu-ray drives can be expected to drop in price in the second half of 2010, the sources estimated.
