Future of MID platform looks bleak

Posted on Monday, November 30 2009 @ 18:32:27 CET by Thomas De Maesschalck

DigiTimes reports PC vendors are pessimistic toward the future of Intel's Mobile Internet Device (MID) platform. Shipments are very weak, and vendors have significantly reduced R&D of MID products.
Although Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics said they have landed MID orders from telecom carriers in Europe, and Gigabyte and BenQ had cooperation with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) and Far Eastone Telecommunications (FET), respectively, to sell MIDs in Taiwan, the sources revealed that their shipments were actually very weak.

Therefore, Taiwan-based vendors Asustek Computer, BenQ, Inventec and Gigabyte Technology have all significantly reduced their development on MID products, while Universal Scientific Industrial (USI) has shifted its MID development to industrial purposes.
