TSMC and UMC expansions may lead to overcapacity

Posted on Friday, February 05 2010 @ 00:30:05 CET by Thomas De Maesschalck

DigiTimes reports industry sources are worried that expansion projects at TSMC and UMC may lead to overcapacity for 300mm wafers:
With both Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) announcing plans to hike their capex budgets for 2010 to expand 12-inch wafer capacity, industry sources are worried that the expansion projects at the world's two largest wafer foundry companies may result in overcapacity at 12-inch fabs.
