Intel's Pentium 4 to fade away

Posted on Thursday, March 03 2005 @ 18:35:46 CET by Thomas De Maesschalck

Intel said the Pentium 4 brand will slowly fade away - to make way for its new dual-core Pentium D and Pentium Extreme Edition (EE) processors.

The difference between the two is that the Pentium D's twin cores don't have Hyperthreading enabled, so a Pentium D will appear to the operating system as two processors. Pentium Extreme Edition, however, does have Hyperthreading and so will appear as four processors. The new Extreme Edition will appear in the second quarter of this year.
