Modding : Cable Modem MOD - SURFboard SB-3100

Posted on Sunday, September 29 2002 @ 14:21:50 CEST by Thomas De Maesschalck

HiTechMODS proves that cable modems don't need to be boring,
they modded the SURFboard SB-3100 cable modem :
Well we kissed our warranty goodbye when we decided to MOD this Cable Modem! We did a few MODs to this unit, first we put in a Power Switch so we can turn it ON/OFF since we got sick of pulling out the power plug each time we finished playing online games and had people pinging us left and right, so a power switch was a must for us. Once we had the unit opened and checked the temperature of the chips and found 2 chips reaching 135ºF - 140ºF we decided to attach heatsinks to the chips. Then we wanted to remove all the extra heat we would have in the modem thanks to the heatsinks so we had to put in a fan. Well we ended up installing a 40mm fan blowing in and a 50mm fan blowing out. That was not the end of the MOD, since we had the unit ripped apart we wanted to add some blue lights in it so you could see a blue glow coming from the units side grills :-). Now that we had all this stuff in it we had to put in a switch so we could control the lights and fans, we did not think this MOD would ever end. Lets go to the MODs step by step now.
