Frostytech cut open one of Zalman's heatpipes to see if the company's marketing is right, you can check it out over here. The site found that Zalman stands by its marketing materials, the cut open heatpipe indeed had grooved and sintered metal wicks. This type of heatpipe is more expensive to produce but has better performance than metal mesh heatpipes.

The dissected composite heatpipe Zalman use in the CNPS11X Extreme is indeed comprised of a grooved and sintered metal wicks as you can plainly see. Good to know Zalman stands by its marketing materials.
