We humans are social creatures. And as social creatures, we enjoy sharing the things we like with the people we care about. In the portable media player age, it's common to see kids sharing headphones, just as it was common to see folks gather around the radios of yesterday. But we've lost some of that sharing capability in the attempt to make things smaller and more portable. Most mp3 players need some sort of external tool to project the bits and bytes to our ears (and usually through very cheap headphones).
