After the dust had settled on AMD's surprising acquisition of ATI Technologies last year, and we began to have time to reflect upon and consider AMD's motives behind the move, things that hadn't really been thought of when the whole story was nothing more than an unlikely rumour began to surface. Away from the grander projects such as the integration of GPU and CPU (aka 'Fusion'), there were some far simpler reasons behind the acquisition, one of them being the inheritance of ATI's motherboard chipset knowledge and technology, which had come to the fore in the previous year or two..
