In 2001, a group of industry executives, mostly hailing from Palm, decided to spurn their employers and develop a device that, as they put it, “works hard, plays harder.” They wanted a handheld that did not go head-to-head with current PDAs or other portable gaming products, yet create something unique that appealed to those aged 18 through 34.
