Gigabyte Radeon HD 3850 (256MB vs. 512MB) Review

The AMD Radeon HD 3850 is available in two flavours, one of which costs slightly less than the other. The cheaper of the two features just 256MB of onboard memory while the other gets a full 512MB memory buffer. Although the 256MB version only has half the memory it costs just 10% less than the fully featured 512MB version. Priced at roughly $170 US the 256MB version does not appear to be all that great in terms of value when compared to the 512MB Radeon HD 3850 at just $190 US.

There you have it the results really do speak for themselves. Although there are not nearly as many benchmarks as we would normally include, I think the picture is clear and including more games and quality settings was not necessary. With just $20 US the difference we would normally just suggest that you go with the 512MB version but, is there any point in spending the extra money, even if it is such a small amount? Obviously those not fazed about saving $20 US will not really care if they buy the 256MB or 512MB version of the Radeon HD 3850 and we imagine most will just purchase the latter.
