BitFenix Colossus review

Installation and testing
The installation of my hardware into the BitFenix Colossus was a breeze, the case provides ample of working space and the tool-free mounting mechanisms didn't deliver any problems. There's plenty of opportunity for cable management and there's sufficient room between the motherboard tray and the right side panel to tuck away lots of cables.

The LED light system of the Colossus is very sweet and looks amazing when it's dark. By pressing a button you can switch between red and blue and another button lets you switch between off, on or pulsating. Being able to turn the LED light system off is a big plus and the pulsating effect looks very cool, it looks a bit as if your case is "breathing".

Personally, I like the warm red color the most as the blue looks a bit too cool for me.

I've uploaded a video clip to YouTube to demonstrate the pulsating effect of the red and blue LEDs:

With the fan controller at minimum the case is very quiet and at maximum it becomes a bit more audible. Overall the fans are very quiet but that's mainly because these are 230mm models with low RPM and the thick double-walled side panels also help to keep the noise down.

Conclusion
BitFenix made a grand debut with the Colossus, if they can keep up this high standard the future looks very rosy for this company. There were some build quality issues with my case due to the fact that it's a pre-production model, but BitFenix listened to all the feedback it received and promised to fix many of these flaws before entering mass production. The retail version of the Colossus should be a very solid case, with plenty of room inside and high-class cable management features.

If you're looking for a high-end, full-tower case I highly recommend checking out the BitFenix Colossus. The Colossus has a unique, distinctive design that distinguishes it from the competition, it's very quiet and it has an amazing LED light system that will amaze your friends. The main drawbacks of the case are the high weight and the relatively high price tag of 159.90EUR ($169).

The Good Stuff
  • Overall build quality should be pretty good
  • Front USB 3.0 ports
  • Awesome LED light system
  • Great cable management options
  • Quiet
  • Good tool-free installation mechanisms (except the HDD trays but this should be fixed in the retail version)
  • Integrated fan controller
  • BitFenix S3 for locking valuables and USB peripherals
  • Lots of working space
  • BitFenix listens to review feedback

    The Bad Stuff
  • Very heavy
  • 140mm rear fan not included, has no specific mounting holes to fit 120mm LC solutions.
  • No room for large radiators without modding
  • Flimsy door hinges
  • Rubber grommets around the cable management holes come off too easily
  • Side panels are hard to remove
  • Expensive

I give the BitFenix Colossus a 9/10 and our Editor's Choice award.
