Final Fantasy VII v ES4: Oblivion

Oblivion is one of the best RPGs ever to be released, with fantastic graphics and immersive gameplay. But how does it compare to perhaps the greatest RPG of all time, Final Fantasy VII? We break out the PlayStation and give you our thoughts.

"It is a very linear game but if anything, compared to Oblivion, this linearity seems like FFVII’s core strength... Strangely, FFVII’s linearity means it coheres brilliantly. It all adds up. All the freedom technology affords a game like Oblivion makes it difficult – perhaps impossible – for the game to hang together. I liked Oblivion, I really did – but I liked it in moments; a cool fight here, a journey across a gorgeous mountain pass there – but the open-ended design means it just doesn’t gel."
