AMD officially confirmed it will release the new Socket F/AM2 Opteron processors on August 15.
While it is expected that the new processors will offer a slight increase in performance and decrease in power consumption, a key feature of the new CPUs will be support for virtualization, which is formally introduced with the launch of the Socket F and AM2 Opterons. AMD also said that it will stay on its path to enable simple drop-in upgrades: The upcoming quad-core CPU generation, scheduled to launch in mid-2007, will continue to use F and AM2 sockets.
