This week at the IDF chip giant Intel announced its 45nm processors will get about fifty new instructions, referred to as SSE4.

The company roughly divides the new instructions in three categories:
  • The first set will accelerate multimedia applications. This includes video, games and 2D/3D rendering.
  • The second part of SSE4 focuses faster text searching and comparing. This could make anti-virus scanners, databases, compilers and compression faster.
  • And the third category focuses on recognizing patterns.
