Understanding Black and White Levels

Reviewers and editors writing about video displays and projectors routinely throw around terms like "blacks," "shadow detail," "contrast," "brightness" and "black levels" without really explaining them. It's confusing, since black levels (brightness) and white levels (contrast) influence each other, but also because video display manufacturers sometimes use different terms to refer to the same video issue.
