"We have very few things that are very significant left to be done [to the technology]," said Carmack. "We are 'light at the end of the tunnel,' going into the home stretch."Carmack also stated that Doom 4 will use the Rage engine, the focus in Doom 4 will be mainly on level design and creative aspects. Hopefully this means Doom 4 will be more than a big tech demo like its predecessor was. However, Carmack also implied that Doom 4 will use an updated Rage engine as he wants to provide at least one strong graphical hook for the game.
Carmack said that a change to the animation system is coming soon, and that a few tweaks need to be made to the MegaTexture system, but that the heavy lifting is mostly over.
A release date of Rage is still unknown, id Software says the game will be released when it's "fun and done".
