As the firm may be facing its first loss in almost 22 years due to dropping demand, Intel announced it will close sites in Asia and scale back operations in the US. About 5,000 to 6,000 jobs are affected but Intel says it would offer some workers positions at other facilities.

In Asia the chip giant will close two assembly test facilities in Penang, Malaysia, and one in Cavite, Philippines. Intel will also halt production at a wafer fab in Hillsboro, Oregon, and stop some operations at a facility in Santa Clara, California.

The restructuring is slated between now and the end of the year.
