GlobalFoundries Vice President of Manufacturing Systems and Technology Tom Sonderman told the press that the new foundry has achieved mature yields for 45nm, and expects to ramp 28nm at Fab 2 by 2011.
Globalfoundries intends to migrate all production at Fab 1 to 40/45nm by the end of 2009, in order to pave the way for sub-28nm production at Fab 2 on schedule, said Sonderman.

Positioned as a foundry start-up initially focusing on 45nm, Globalfoundries is already seen as a major rival of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), but when asked about the company's outlook, Sonderman only commented that Globalfoundries' goal is to advance its process technology to the sub-45nm class ahead of Intel.
