eWeek published an article discussing what the Mac mini is, and what it is not. They believe that the Mac mini isn't a cut-down version of the Macintosh and that it also isn't just a competitor for entry-level PCs.

What they believe is that this little thing will sort of sneak into a domain in which Microsoft also wants to become the dominant: our living rooms.

Instead of walking on crowded markets Apple tries to find a niche and grow it - a perfect example of this is their very successful iPod.
