The VLC Media Player developers are working on a new video editing project named VLMC (VideoLAN Movie Creator). This free video editing program aims to offer features to realize semi-professional quality movies, but with the aim to stay simple and user-friendly. Windows and Linux users will be able to download the software in February 2010, while Mac users will have to wait a bit longer.

One of the first screenshots of VLMC can be found at French tech site Les Numériques. The website reports VLMC will support all camcorders and that it will support almost all video formats, including MPEG-4, DivX, MP4, AVCHD and HDV.

The application will feature a timeline with support for up to 64 video and audio tracks, and there will be support for up to two displays. Basic effects like title screens will be included and there will be a plug-in system to add 2D/3D and transition effects. Over time, the software will also be able to import and edit videos from YouTube and other video sharing websites.
