Earthlink and Webroot Software published a report stating that their spyware detection programs have detected 116.5 million pieces of spyware, ad-ware and other malicious software during the fourth quarter of 2004.

This is an increase of 72 percent compared to Q3 2004.
"The audited number from the past year clearly show that spyware is rapidly becoming one of the Internet's most dangerous threats," said Matt Cobb, EarthLink's vice president of core applications.
