Intel starts dual-core processor shipments

Intel today said is has started shipments of its first dual-core Pentium Extreme Edition processors. These processors are meant for workstations and high-end gaming PCs.

Dell said that it would soon start selling workstations and enthusiast PCs with Intel's new dual-core Pentium Extreme Edition 840 CPU. This processors runs at 3.2GHz and uses Intel's dual-core processor-based 955X Express chipset.

AMD plans to launch its dual-core Opteron processors on April 21 - this processor is meant for servers. By the end of next year both companies will have dual-core processors for all three markets: notebooks, desktop and servers.
