Electronics firms want to end HD-DVD / Blu-Ray DVD format war

Toshiba and Sony got support from other electronics companies to develop a common next-gen DVD format. Both Panasonic and Philips said they are studying ways to end the three-year 'DVD format war' between Blu-Ray and HD DVD.
Sony and Toshiba said on Thursday they would work toward a common format in order to avoid a drawn-out fight that would confuse consumers and hinder the industry's development, just like the spat between the VHS and Betamax video tape formats two decades ago.
