AMD's sales still lagging far behind Intel

Market Research has published a report about the processor market in the first quarter of this year. Intel has a 81.7 percent share of all x86 desktop, server and notebook processors while AMD accounts for 16.9 percent of the market.

The rest of the market is split by companies like Transmeta and VIA, but Transmeta is slowly moving out the processor market to concentrate on chip technology solutions.

AMD's sales are increasing rapidly, mainly because of the AMD Opteron server and Athlon 64 desktop processors, the company gained 1.9 percent since last year. But Intel is still well ahead of AMD in the fastest growing PC market segment, the laptop market.
