HP ousts Apotheker and names Meg Whitman as new CEO

Reuters writes HP's board has replaced Leo Apotheker with former eBay CEO Meg Whitman as its new president and CEO. However, one source said HP was not preparing to make changes to its strategy, contradicting speculation that the company may backtrack on major decisions taking during Apotheker's term such as the spinoff of HP's PC division and the costly acquisition of British software developer Autonomy.
The move, effective immediately, confirmed earlier reports on the impending change.

"We are at a critical moment and we need renewed leadership to successfully implement our strategy and take advantage of the market opportunities ahead," said Ray Lane, who has moved from non-executive chairman to executive chairman of HP's board.

Referring to Apotheker, Lane said the board believes "the job of the HP CEO now requires additional attributes."

The board also plans to appoint an independent director.

Hopefully they stay out of the personal computing market altogether, and concentrate on the business segment where they belong.
