The December 2012 marketshare report from NetMarketShare shows Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system now has a marketshare of 1.72 percent in the desktop operating system market, up from 1.09 percent the month before. The figure confirms the poor adoption trajectory of the new OS, in roughly the same time period the adoption rate of Windows 7 was 5.8 percent, more than 3x higher than Windows 8's uptake.

Windows 7 remains the most popular operating system on the planet with a marketshare of 45.11 percent, up from 44.71 percent in November. Windows XP on the other hand saw its marketshare slide from 39.82 percent in November to 39.08 percent in December, while Windows Vista remained stable around 5.67 percent.
