ICANN approves .mobi domain for cell phones

ICANN approved the new .mobi top level domain which is aimed at websites that have been designed to be viewed on mobile phones.
The registration of names on the “.mobi” domain will be handled by mTLD Top Level Domain, a joint venture set up by a number of mobile phone companies, including Hutchison 3, the GSM Association, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Syniverse Technologies, TIM, Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
The first .mobi domains will be available in the first half of 2006. It will start with a 90-days 'sunrise' period, which will allow registered trademark owners to secure their .mobi domain name. Read more at FT
