DRAM shortage is easing

DRAMeXchange reports DRAM sales hit a record level of $16.5 billion in the second quarter of this year, up 16.9 percent versus the previous quarter. The market is still seeing a shortage of DRAM but the imbalance is no longer as severe as it was in the first quarter. However, it appears memory makers have no plans to significantly scale up production capacity until at least the end of the year;
"The DRAM market benefitted from the upswing in ASPs and continuing progress in suppliers' technology migrations," said Avril Wu, research manager of DRAMeXchange, in a press statement. “At the same time, suppliers do not appear to have plans to expand their production capacities in a significant scale between now and the end of the year."
Samsung was the largest DRAM maker with a marketshare of 46.2 percent in Q2 2017. SK Hynix takes the second spot with 27.3 percent and Micron follows with 21.6 percent marketshare.
