Facebook showed off the latest progress on Santa Cruz, an upcoming standalone virtual reality headset. This high-end product will feature six degrees of freedom and will not require a link to a PC.

It comes with controllers that look similar to the Rift's touch controllers, they feature small infrared LEDs that are tracked by four camera sensors inside the headband. Santa Cruz will be able to track the controllers even when they are above your head, something that's not possible with the Microsoft mixed reality headset reference design.
Today, we showed the next phase of Santa Cruz development, delivering hand presence with two positionally tracked controllers. This is an important, industry-first milestone that brings the magic and incredible design expertise of Rift's Touch controllers into a completely standalone experience.
The first Santa Cruz developer kits will ship in 2018. Facebook says they will soon share more details about this project.
