Sony said today at a game developer conference that its Cell processor which will be used on the PlayStation 3 will have seven out of eight cores operational.

The company says they are having yield problems so it's possible that the eight core only works in some cases. But they do guarantee that at least seven cores will work.

Sony also announced the Cell chip will offer 7.1 audio with support for 1,000 channels.
