Sony PS3's Blu-ray adds $100 to manufacturing cost

Posted on Saturday, September 03 2005 @ 02:38:38 CEST by

The Inquirer reports adding a Blu-ray drive to the PlayStation 3 console will cost Sony an enormous $100. It is believed that Sony's decision to equip the PS3 with a Blu-ray player will be one of the reasons why the console will have a heavy price tag.
Microsoft is playing a safe game here, it will launch with DVD+RW but in some point in the future might release a new Xbox 360 version with HD-DVD or a Blu Ray drive. We don’t expect that this will happen anytime soon, but we are sure it will happen at some point in the next few years.
