Recent Intel processor architectures used thermal paste under the heatspreader, a move that resulted in a lot of criticism from tech enthusiasts as it results in higher temperatures, and lower overclocking potential. Now the firm is back to using a gold-plated soldered IHS, similar to what was used for Sandy Bridge.
he Core i9-9900K uses a gold plated solder which makes sure proper contact is made with the IHS and lastly, we can see Intel’s STIM (Solder Thermal Interface Material) which is sort of a high-quality TIM between the CPU and IHS.
At the moment, it's unknown whether this is exclusive to the Core i9 series. Hopefully, lower-tier models come with the same soldered IHS.
