Windows 10 finally overtakes Windows 7

The latest stats from NetMarketShare reveal Windows 10 is now more popular among web users than the aging Windows 7. At the end of 2018, Windows 10 held a marketshare of 39.22 percent, while Windows 7 was down to 36.90 percent. Windows 8.1 has 4.45 percent and 4.54 percent of web users are still using the totally unprotected Windows XP.

Then there's 2.92 percent running Mac OS X 10.12 and 2.55 percent on Mac OS X 10.13, and all Linux distros combined make up another 1.53 percent. Everything else is below 1.5 percent.

The number of people still using Windows 7 is posing a problem for Microsoft. Extended support for Windows 7 will end on January 14, 2020. This means that little more than a year from now, a lot of Windows PCs will no longer receive security updates. Will Microsoft give users another opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, or will they extend Windows 7 support like they did with Windows XP? I guess we'll find out later this year.
