Later this year we'll see the launch of Intel's Rocket Lake-S, a new desktop platform that will adopt the Willow Cove architecture. Despite still being 14nm, these chips will be the biggest change in quite some time. Besides the new cores they will also feature Xe-based integrated graphics. It's rumored that Intel will offer variants with up to eight cores and sixteen threads.

So why are there only eight cores when the current Comet Lake-S offers up to ten cores? Word on the street is that it's because Rocket Lake-S is basically a 14nm version of the mobile Tiger Lake. VideoCardz reports a six-core sample got spotted in the 3DMark benchmark database:
The two known leakers (TUM_APISAK and _rogame) have posted the result of the first Rocket Lake-S sample, featuring 6 cores and 12-threads. The CPU has a base clock of 3.5 GHz and a boost clock of around 4.1-4.2 GHz. This is clearly an engineering sample running on the engineering platform (look at the Motherboard field in the leaks).
