Epic Games has shown itself as a big fan of Sony's PlayStation 5 console. In particular, the game publisher really likes the console's proprietary SSD technology. Epic Games claims the PS5's storage architecture is far ahead of what's available on the PC. Not because the raw bandwidth is higher but because there's a lot less layering and overhead, which results in much higher system-level performance.

VG247 reports Epic Games even rewrote the core I/O subsystems of Unreal Engine 5 to take full advantage of the PS5's storage architecture:
“The PlayStation 5 provides a huge leap in both computing and graphics performance, but its storage architecture is also truly special,” Nick Penwarden, VP of engineering at Epic Games told us.

“The ability to stream in content at extreme speeds enables developers to create denser and more detailed environments, changing how we think about streaming content. It’s so impactful that we’ve rewritten our core I/O subsystems for Unreal Engine with the PlayStation 5 in mind,” he added.
