A new whitepaper from NVIDIA about the RTX 30 series indirectly hints at a future GeForce RTX 3080 card with 20GB GDDR6X memory. The model that just got launched features 10GB but it's been rumored for some time now that a 20GB version is also in the works. VideoCardz notes its curious that NVIDIA is explicitly using "GeForce RTX 3080 10GB Founders Edition" in the whitepaper. All other video cards mentioned in the paper do not have the memory configuration in their SKU name. This seems look a good hint that more versions of the RTX 3080 are on the way.
The GeForce RTX 3070, which is also listed in this document, lacks memory configuration in the product name. This is despite rumors that we will be seeing a GA104-based 16GB model too. However, the explanation for this is rather simple. The 16GB model will feature a different GPU configuration. The card will likely adopt Ti or SUPER branding so it is a completely different SKU. We have been told that this model will launch after both RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3080 20GB.
The 20GB model is expected within a couple of weeks but for now it's still unofficial. Reviews of the GeForce RTX 3080 hit the web yesterday and reception was very good. At the moment, the GeForce RTX 3080 is the fastest video card on the market. It beats the previous-gen RTX 2080 Ti by a large margin and is roughly double as fast as the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which is the fastest card AMD has until its RDNA2 GPUs hit the scene. Peak power consumption can be pretty high though, but Ampere is absolutely a gaming beast and the cooling solution used by NVIDIA's Founders Editions keeps the cards relatively cool and quiet.
