Cray to use AMD's Opteron

The supercomputer producer Cray is buzy with the development of an AMD Opteron powered supercomputer for the Sandia National Laboratories, which has facilities in New Mexico and California :
The reports say the computer would rival NEC’s Earth Simulator as the as the world’s most powerful computer, with a performance rating of around 100 teraflops.

The 90 million-dollar project, code-named Red Storm, will be unveiled at a press conference in Albuquerque later today, according to the reports.

AMD is looking for kudos for its upcoming chip with its new focus on becoming a player in the server market. Having Operton powering the world's mnost powerful computer would certainly give it something to shout about.
