Op M3Dzone is te lezen dat er in de officiële UT2003-maps geen onderwatergevechten mogelijk zullen zijn. Dit zou gedaan zijn om de gameplay te verbeteren.
"Yes, it's true, I can't think of a single map where you can swim in UT2K3. I removed the water from December because I didn't like how it played. I did it on a whim one day and never went back. The new version flows much better with that area open, and offers multiple routes for attack and return. The engine handles water and swimming just fine. The meshes have swimming animations etc and the bots handle it just as well as they handled it in UT. But I do not know of an Epic/DE map that still uses water you can swim in. I can only think of two cases that actually had deep water (December and Geothermal) and in both cases, they play 10x better with out. (Both maps in my expert CTF opinion ultra-cool) In most cases, we didn't like how it played. But I'm sure within a day someone will release CTF-December with the water back"
