Modern notebooks pack the same processing power as a desktop PC in only a fraction of the space. With components being packed so tightly together, heat buildup becomes a serious issue that designers have to contend with. Notebook coolers were designed as an attempt to aid in dissipating the large amounts of heat generated by notebooks.
