The Tech Report learned that Khronos' upcoming Vulkan (glNext) API is based on AMD's Mantle. Vulkan standardizes and replaces Mantle, and it will reportedly be very easy to switch from a Mantle rendered to Vulkan. Vukan is a low-level API that completely exposes that GPU is a separate processor, runs asynchronously to the CPU. Full details over here.

AMD's Mantle initiative will be pretty short-lived as it has served its purpose, the firm told developers earlier this week that they now need to focus on DirectX 12 and Vulkan instead.
